Up near the source of the Conwy, where countless tributary streams drain moors and mountains, there is a vast expanse of open country; an area of bell heather and cotton grass seldom trodden except by a few sheep and occasional walkers.
Climb the hills and notice the multiplicity of greens: dark and heavy where the plantations are but light and translucent in the deciduous woods. This is terrain in which nature’s moods can change from hour to hour. A bright sun, penetrating into deep pockets of shadow, is succeeded by overhanging cloud scowling down upon implacable mountains, drenching valleys in lightning storms ; followed by a hazy sunlight filtering through shining wet leaves into cascading water.
Walkers may feel assured: the world may come to a few well-publicised spots but once we are away from the tarmac this splendid world is ours.
The narrow crooked village street, the cosy inn and bakery opposite: one feels thankful that steep hills and narrow roads have helped to preserve the character of this place.
Remark on the quiet and you will be heard across the valley.
